Mesothelioma symptoms

Mesothelioma symptoms tend to develop gradually, and earlier symptoms are often confused for illnesses that are more amenable to treatment.

Common symptoms like chest pain, difficult in breathing and cough is usually confused with pneumonia and common cold. Hence it is always advisable to get a physician’s opinion before proceeding further. It is common for the early mesothelioma symptoms to often be ignored or mistaken for some minor ailments

However, mesothelioma has a latency of up to thirty-forty years, and many individuals previously exposed to asbestos are now displaying symptoms. Hence this is really a difficult condition to get cured once it is identified…

Mesothelioma advanced symptoms are prevailing only in the last stage. Hence it is difficult to cure this condition. It is always advisable to seek an opinion of a mesothelioma lawyer to get compensation either for treatment or livelihood.

Abdominal mesothelioma

Abdominal mesothelioma is a type of industrial illness based problem occurring in persons who get exposed to the asbestos like materials. Abdominal mesothelioma is gaining significance currently due to enhanced awareness.

In this form of affection, the asbestos fiber may get inhaled and then through the lymphatics, it might enter into the abdominal cavity or some times the asbestos fibers may get swallowed and entered into the intestinal segments also.

Abdominal mesothelioma associates with the occurrence of deranged cellular pattern in the regions like peritoneal membrane which generally lines the abdominal cavity and the organs located in the abdominal cavity are also affected.

Hence, the other name for the abdominal mesothelioma is the peritoneal mesothelioma.

The organs like liver, spleen , small intestine comprising duodenum, ileum, jejunum and large intestine comprising of caecum, colon etc. get affected because of occurrence of the abdominal type.

Persons affected with peritoneal form can file a litigation in the court of law if once diagnosed, along with the necessary documents given by the qualified medical personnel and other required evidences.
However, for this purpose, the sufferer or family members of the person who died due to the occurrence of mesothelioma affecting the abdominal cavity and organs should make a law suit with in a period of three years.

Abdominal pain
occurs in the affected patients and however, it may take many months some times even ten to twenty years for the person to experience the symptoms revealed by this affection.
Nausea and obstruction of intestinal segments like duodenum or jejunum or ileum or caecum or colon may also occur in many affected persons.

In affected persons, pyrexia, fluid accumulation in the affected cavity, weakness and some times even the breathing problems may occur.

Every year, in United States of America, about two hundred to five hundred cases with the symptoms of this problem are encountered and this may get increased if more workers in asbestos industries get exposed to the dangerous asbestos fibres.

CAT scan will help the diagnosis of the problem and it is to be remembered that the abdominal mesothelioma might be an extension of pleural form also and similarly, the abdominal mesothelioma may occur independently.

Asbestos Induced Abdominal Cancer -Nathalie Fiset

Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma is the official term used by doctors for a rare but dangerous type of cancer that is generally caused by the ihalation or ingestion of asbestos fibers. Asbestos is a fibrous fire retardant material that is heavily used in most industries, and as such people who work in these environments are at the highest level of risk.

Because of the fibrous nature of asbestos, it’s small fibers can be inhaled easily by people, and it can also cling to the skin and clothes, so people who don’t work directly exposed to asbestos can still contract Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma. People who live with those who have been around asbestos are equally at risk and can still contract this cancer.

The most common cause of mesothelioma is inhalation or ingesting the particles or asbestos, which leads to the development of malignant cells in the lining which covers most of the body’s internal organs. These malignant cells are what cause the cancer. Thankfully, it is not a contagious disease and is relatively rare, with only around three thousand cases being diagnosed annually worldwide.

Symptoms

Mesothelioma symptoms do not manifest until around twenty to fifty years after asbestos fibers have entered the body, so often the people who are diagnosed are in their middle to late years in life. One of the ways to detect Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma is by sudden and rapid loss of weight, and swelling in the stomach area accompanied by sharp pains due to pressure from an increase in body fluids in the abdominal lining.

Another set of symptoms are difficulty in bowel movement, blood clotting, and fevers similar to intestinal flu. The problem with the symptoms of Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma is that they are often misdiagnosed because they can easily be taken as symptoms of some other, less dangerous illnesses.

Effects

The effects of Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma can be ultimately fatal if left unchecked. One of the more dangerous effects is the development of tumors in the stomach lining due to fluid buildup and the presence of the malignant cells in the body. The tumors cause blood clotting, as mentioned, and can spread from the abdominal area upwards to the chest cavity, affecting both the heart and lungs.

A few of the more severe effect of Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma include bleeding in the internal organs once the malignant cells grow to a sufficient level. Left unchecked, this internal bleeding is fatal. Pulmonary Emboli is another effect of this sickness, which is the formation of clots of dried or coagulated blood in the lungs. Again, this is ultimately fatal if left unchecked.

Treatment

Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma is treated in a variety of fashions, and while it is generally approached like any other cancer, some of the methods commonly used to treat the more common forms of cancer don’t prove as effective. For one thing, surgery to remove the malignant cells have shown a very low survivability rate among the patients, with an average life expectancy of only 5 years post operation.

The most successful treatments of Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma have stemmed from general chemotherapy as well a a fairly new method known as heated intraoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This method combines chemotherapy with a heat surgery treatment that removes the malignant cells without causing any damage to the healthy surrounding tissue. The application of heat to the malignant cells also allows a more efficient introduction to the body of the medical agents used in the chemotherapy.

Avoidance/Safety Tips

On a personal level, one of the most obvious ways to avoid exposure to this cancer would be to stay away from places which have high concentrations of asbestos. There are many different forms of asbestos now being developed, and the ones which have been noted as causing Abdominal Asbestos Mesothelioma were versions primarily developed in the 1970s and 1980s. Modern fire retardant materials are much safer and have been mandated in some parts of the world to replace asbestos entirely.

Since asbestos fibers normally have to be ingested or inhaled to cause mesothelioma then using a face mask and avoiding eating around asbestos is a good safety practice. However, since the fibers are invisible to the naked eye and can actually be carried on skin and clothing, another safety tip is to wear a completely different set of clothing when working around asbestos, and to both remove the clothing and bathe completely after exposure. This minimizes the risk that any fibers will be taken home to one’s families after work and consequently avoid abdominal mesothelioma caused by asbestos exposure.

Specific Symptoms Of Mesothelioma

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are different from the peritoneal mesothelioma. The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include cachexia, loss of weight, swelling in the abdominal region etc.

There will be severe pain in the abdominal area which is due to ascitis. The ascitis is nothing but the fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity.

Clotting of the blood, fever, anemia, disturbances in the bowel movements etc are the peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms.

In case of spread of the cancer to the other parts of the body other than mesothelium, then difficulty in swallowing, swelling of the neck, swelling of the face,  severe pain in the neck and the abdominal region etc can be expected.

The peritoneal mesothelioma tumors do not cause any discomforts or symptoms unless they become very big in size. Once the tumors increase in size mesothelioma symptoms that are expected includes pain in the abdomen, and the mass in the abdominal area.

In case the condition becomes very severe thrombophlebitis, intra vascular coagulation [disseminated], and severe to moderate bleeding in the other parts of the body are noticed.

Jaundice [abnormal yellow coloration of the skin and eye], reduced blood glucose level, and pulmonary emboli [clotting of blood in the lung arteries] are other mesothelioma symptoms that are noticed in  very severe cases

The mesothelioma type of cancer can never spread to bone, brain, and adrenal glands. In case of pleural mesothelioma the tumors are seen only in one side of the lungs. The moment any one of the symptoms is noticed, it is better to consult the doctor as early as possible. There are plenty of treatment options that can be tried for mesothelioma.

Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

Before knowing the symptoms of mesothelioma, it is better to know the anatomy of lungs. The internal organs are covered by a structure called mesothelium. The cancer of the mesothelium is called as mesothelioma.

Cancer is unwanted growth as well as the multiplication of the cells of particular organ or tissue. If the excess growth is limited to that particular tissue, then it is called as benign cancer. In case the cancer growth spreads to other organ or tissue then it is called as malignant cancer. This mesothelioma is malignant type of cancer. The triggering factor for the mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma is suspected based of mesothelioma symptoms. Let us discuss about the some of the  mesothelioma symptoms.

The mesothelioma symptoms don’t appear immediately after the exposure of the asbestos. It may take even twenty to fifty years for the symptoms to appear.

Cough, pain in the chest region [this pain is due to the pressure exerted by the fluid accumulated in the pleural space], shortness of the breath are the common symptoms in case of pleural mesothelioma.

The other pleural mesothelioma symptoms are pleural effusion, fluid accumulation around the lung, wheezing, hoarseness etc. In case the condition becomes severe, the person will have thick tumor masses in the pleura.  In those patients pneumothorax and collapse of the lung is certainly possible.
