The hidden Facts About Beryllium, Another Asbestos

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Do you about this metal- Beryllium, which is perfect substitute for Asbestos? The Americans who worked on the first atomic bomb was the first victim of this deleterious metal. Although Beryllium is strong, stable and light, a pinch of toxic dust is more than sufficient to kill a human.

Nowadays the workers who are working as seafarers, whose job is to maintain ship are the persons who are under exposure to this metal. These workers are using Jasons De-rusting and rescaling guns, which raise the concern about Beryllium exposure.

Beryllium is extensively used on tanker ships containing fuel as they does not spark unlike other metals.

Beryllium causes berylliosis, a long-term lung disease. Constant exposure of beryllium for a short spell of period is more than sufficient to develop this disease even after 20 years of this exposure.

Please keep in mind that the symptoms will be seen even after complete cessation of exposure after considerable time.

The dust of beryllium may result in untreatable pulmonary disease that is similar to asbestosis.

Weight loss, fatigue, chest pain, cough, and shortness of breath are the symptoms of beryllosis. The typical symptom of beryllosis is development of rashes in the external surface of body like the nose, mouth, eyes and skin.

As far as treatment of berylliosis is concerned,  there is no curative or preventive therapy. The only way to prevent berylliosis is preventing the exposure of an individual to beryllium.

There is no preventive or curative treatment available for berylliosis or chronic beryllium disease.

How To Prevent Mesothelioma Risk?

Mesothelioma risk prevention

Asbestos has been mined and used commercially since the late 1800’s. Asbestos has been used extensively during World War II without knowing the risk involved with it. Apart from this, the workers in the construction and heating industries, workers within mines and mills, shipyards, and producers of asbestos products are in increase risk of mesothelioma development.

Although U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) fixes maximum permissible level for asbestos in the workplace, British Government’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) confirms that mesothelioma threshold should be very minimum. Hence HSE does not presume that any such MPL exists.

The risk prone group of mesothelioma should wear personal protective equipment(PPE) to minimize their risk of exposure.

There are few cases that asbestos dust brought home on the hair and clothing of asbestos workers may lead to mesothelioma among family members. In order to prevent the family members from the chance of asbestos exposure, asbestos workers should shower and change their clothing before reaching home after work.

There is no evidence that smoking causes Asbestos Lung Cancer. But the asbestos exposure combined with smoking will definitely increases one’s risk of developing mesothelioma especially in the lung air passageways. So smoking cigarettes should be avoided among the mesothelioma risk groups.

Specific Symptoms Of Mesothelioma

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are different from the peritoneal mesothelioma. The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include cachexia, loss of weight, swelling in the abdominal region etc.

There will be severe pain in the abdominal area which is due to ascitis. The ascitis is nothing but the fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity.

Clotting of the blood, fever, anemia, disturbances in the bowel movements etc are the peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms.

In case of spread of the cancer to the other parts of the body other than mesothelium, then difficulty in swallowing, swelling of the neck, swelling of the face,  severe pain in the neck and the abdominal region etc can be expected.

The peritoneal mesothelioma tumors do not cause any discomforts or symptoms unless they become very big in size. Once the tumors increase in size mesothelioma symptoms that are expected includes pain in the abdomen, and the mass in the abdominal area.

In case the condition becomes very severe thrombophlebitis, intra vascular coagulation [disseminated], and severe to moderate bleeding in the other parts of the body are noticed.

Jaundice [abnormal yellow coloration of the skin and eye], reduced blood glucose level, and pulmonary emboli [clotting of blood in the lung arteries] are other mesothelioma symptoms that are noticed in  very severe cases

The mesothelioma type of cancer can never spread to bone, brain, and adrenal glands. In case of pleural mesothelioma the tumors are seen only in one side of the lungs. The moment any one of the symptoms is noticed, it is better to consult the doctor as early as possible. There are plenty of treatment options that can be tried for mesothelioma.

Pleural Mesothelioma Symptoms

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

Before knowing the symptoms of mesothelioma, it is better to know the anatomy of lungs. The internal organs are covered by a structure called mesothelium. The cancer of the mesothelium is called as mesothelioma.

Cancer is unwanted growth as well as the multiplication of the cells of particular organ or tissue. If the excess growth is limited to that particular tissue, then it is called as benign cancer. In case the cancer growth spreads to other organ or tissue then it is called as malignant cancer. This mesothelioma is malignant type of cancer. The triggering factor for the mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma is suspected based of mesothelioma symptoms. Let us discuss about the some of the  mesothelioma symptoms.

The mesothelioma symptoms don’t appear immediately after the exposure of the asbestos. It may take even twenty to fifty years for the symptoms to appear.

Cough, pain in the chest region [this pain is due to the pressure exerted by the fluid accumulated in the pleural space], shortness of the breath are the common symptoms in case of pleural mesothelioma.

The other pleural mesothelioma symptoms are pleural effusion, fluid accumulation around the lung, wheezing, hoarseness etc. In case the condition becomes severe, the person will have thick tumor masses in the pleura.  In those patients pneumothorax and collapse of the lung is certainly possible.

Even a large cash sum never would really compensate for the loss of health- and probably loss of life due to this terrible disease.

Mesothelioma settlement not only help both or all parties to settle a case with out a trial but also help the affected family to bear the medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering and in some cases punitive damages.

Every case is different and the reports of earlier verdicts to victims do not guarantee the amount received in a settlement. The settlement tends to be larger in wrongful death cases than personal injury cases.

The amount received is also dependant on a number of other factors including the region, political situation, the amount of damage done to the plaintiff and the skill and experience of the attorney.

Get To Know Mesothelioma Causes

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that is becoming more common as per recent statistics all over the world. The cells lining the body’s cavities that surrounding the lungs, heart and abdomen are infiltrated by cancerous cells causing Mesothelioma.

Asbestos the major risk factor

The direct and secondary exposure to asbestos has been shown to the major risk factor for Mesothelioma. The fibrous metamorphic minerals namely chrysolite, tremolite, actinolite, amosite, crocidolite and anthophyllite form the asbestos group.

This miracle mineral has been widely used as an insulator in many places since time immemorial and its link with the disease has been established as early as 1960’s.

In nature the chrysolite (or white) asbestos is known to be the safest and tremolite has been used in some brands of talcum powder. The remaining four types called amphibole minerals are made of straight needle-like fibers and used in various industries. These fibres can end up in the linings of the body cavity in unprotected industrial workers, construction workers and miners by various routes. The family members and others living with asbestos workers are also at increased risk due to the asbestos dust brought home on the clothing and hair of the workers.

Other causes

Mesothelioma is also not a contagious or an inherited disease. Smoking and prior exposure to the known cause also increases the persons risk for mesothelioma and other types of lung cancer.

Mesothelioma occasionally develops in people never exposed to the known cause. In rare cases the disease develops in people who have been exposed to radiation or to certain minerals closely related to asbestos. Exposure to radiation from thorium dioxide (Thorotast) that was used until 1950’s in X-ray tests have shown to be one of the reasons for the development of mesothelioma.

Scientists also think that SV40 (simian virus) may act as a cofactor if already exposed to any of the major risk factors. It is far less important risk factor than asbestos and doesn’t cause disease on its own.

In Turkey there are reports to show that a mineral called Zeolite may cause mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma diagnosis plays an important role in treatment of the same. Doctors usually collect blood to identify the tumor cells. The other methods of diagnosis of mesothelioma are discussed below-

The fluid present in the pleura is taken out by chest drain or pleural tap. In case of the fluid accumulation in the peritoneum, the fluid is collected by paracentesis. Pericardiocentesis is performed to get the fluid from the pericardium. Absence of abnormal cells in the fluid collected, not necessarily rules out existence of mesothelioma.

By any chance the cytology is positive, [I mean if there is any abnormal cells noticed] the doctor will conduct the biopsy test to confirm the cancerous growth. Biopsy is nothing but pathological examination of the cells collected from the tumor or excess growth of the affected organ or tissue.

There are different ways of performing the biopsy. One technique is called thoracoscopy. Thoracoscopy is important for the pleural mesothelioma diagnosis.

In this procedure, small cut is made in the wall of the chest. A light, thin tube called thoracoscope is inserted in to the small cut made in the chest wall. The tissue sample is collected by the thoracoscope. In this technique the doctor can take the tissue sample with minimum damage to the body and also can have look inside the chest.

In case of mesothelioma of peritoneum, the doctor performs laparoscopy. Laparoscopy helps mesothelioma diagnosis in a big way. As per this technique a small incision is made in the wall of the abdomen.

A small instrument called laparoscope is inserted to get the tissue samples out of the body. The tissue sample thus collected will be subjected to pathological studies to find out the abnormal cells whose presence will confirm mesothelioma diagnosis. In case the laparoscopy is not sufficient to take the tissue samples, a much more extensive surgery may be performed by the doctor.

A New Tool for Diagnosing Mesothelioma Cancers

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Rosetta Genomics, Ltd holds it hand with NYU Medical center to develop early diagnostic products for Asbestos Lung cancer (Mesothelioma) and other lung ailments.

According to this program, nearly 45 million Americans who are at the brink of Mesothelioma due to exposure to asbestos fibers, as well as those who are smokers.

This test mainly aims at extracting microRNAs from a simple blood draw from the suspected persons. This is the main protocol for the Rosetta Genomics’ Ltd.

Dr. Harvey Pass, Professor and Chief, Division of Thoracic Surgery and Thoracic Oncology at NYU Medical Center opined that this simple test of  detecting lung cancer will really have far reaching implication on the fight against cancer.

The researchers confirmed that microRNAs are having great potential to act as a perfect biomarkers for various cancers including asbestos lung cancer.

We can hope for the best as the two giants- NYU medical center and Rosetta Genomics provide a real boon in early diagnosis of mesothelioma by means of microRNA diagnosis.
